Bald Mama is a local non-profit for people undergoing cancer treatment. We provide free services such as grocery delivery, housecleaning, lawn care, pharmacy pickup/delivery, and much, much more. We help people focus on healing rather than on day to day chores which can be stressful and challenging.
Are you passionate about what we're doing? Let us know! We are always looking for volunteers to help us make our vision a reality. We'll help you find a way to volunteer that best suits you. We're excited to have you join the team!
Whether you help through monetary donations, volunteering your time, or spreading our mission through word-of-mouth, thank you. We couldn't accomplish our goals without the help of supporters like you.
If we truly pay attention we all have that one thing we are passionate about, but we also have a calling. That one thing that no matter how many times we try to put it down, it comes and knocks on your door, or interrupts your sleep until you answer.
Bald Mama was introduced and handed down to me between 2007 and 2010 by Maggie San Miguel. I introduced Bald Mama to the metroplex in 2011. I was so grateful for this gift, it was mine, I…. was going to change the world. I had a great deal of passion, and ambition, but for a single mom, it became a little hard to take care of the needs of my children, myself, and all of these courageous patients undergoing chemo treatment. All financed out of my small pockets. Also helping patients was a beautiful thing, especially when you see their cancer go into remission, they get better, but when I lost my first patient due to a battle with breast cancer. Long story short I decided, “God… I don’t think this is what you want from me… I’m going to put this down…. It hurts”.
The very first patient I lost name was Vicky. I had never met any of her family or friends, she spent a lot of her time alone. The very first time I met her, she was mean as a rattle snake. I started going over to do light weight chores, taking her clothes to the laundry, but what I found she really needed, what made her day, was when I came over to watch soap operas with her. We bonded, and I felt like, I had made a friend for life. Even when she was in hospice, I went to watch One Life To Live. I went to Ms. Vicky’s funeral a few days after she’d passed on, where I was truly, the only black person in the room. What made this an extraordinary moment for me, is the last few months, it was only she and I, but at her funeral everyone there knew who I was. They knew about Bald Mama, because she told them, and she told them, what it meant to her to have me there, and they shared that with me. That changed my whole outlook about what I was doing, and I saw how important “my calling” was to me, and how important it was for others. The question remained, how do I continue? A few weeks later some of my college friends took me to a comedy show at the Improv. For an hour and a half, I felt what it was like to not have a care in the world. True statement, laughter is healing. A light bulb went off… this is how I will fund my non-profit. At the time, I had no idea, what it would take to make this happen, how many life lessons I would have to learn…I had to learn a whole new business. I’m so grateful that while, really studying this art form, I’ve gained so many hilarious people in my life, who I now call friends, who have without hesitation offered me a hand, to help out with my cause.
It’s amazing to me, how much Bald Mama and I have grown together. How the relationship with this calling has over the years left me on my knees in tears, but at the same time, been my place solace. I have always had a great deal of compassion, but Bald Mama has taught me Patience,Hope, Strength and Humility. I have not always been in a position to help, when I see people around me, who I loved or admired battling this terrible disease, but I took notes, and truly realized just like I didn’t expect for them to fight alone, neither can I. All the things I dreamed for this foundation did not manifest until I truly started to ask for help from others.
